How Do LED Lights Work?

LED technology has technically been around since the early 1960s. However, it’s only in recent times that LED lamps have become practical lighting solutions for homes and businesses. Their energy efficiency is unmatched, so they’re perfect for home and business owners who are looking to save money while reducing their impact on the environment.

So, how do LED lights work? Read on to discover the inner-workings of this exciting technology.

How LED Bulbs Work

“LED” stands for “light emitting diode.” A diode is a semiconductor that emits electromagnetic energy. A light-emitting diode is a semiconductor that emits electromagnetic energy as light, rather than heat. It accomplishes this using a two-lead semiconductor that features an N-type semiconductor and a P-type semiconductor (negative and positive).

Although you now have a bit of background on what an LED light actually is, you’re probably still wondering, how do LED lights work?

The N-type semiconductor has extra electrons, which are negatively charged particles. The P-type semiconductor has extra holes––or positively charged particles. By connecting the two semiconductors and supplying a forward voltage, the electrons recombine at the P-N junction, creating electromagnetic energy that’s emitted as light.

The Difference Compared to Traditional Bulbs

Traditional bulbs––incandescents for example––convert electrical energy into heat first, and then that heat is converted into light. LED lights work by skipping the heating phase, and instead converting electrical energy directly into light. Bypassing the heating step saves a significant amount of electrical energy, which is reflected in your monthly bill!
