Replacing your Rear Projection DLP Lamp

Posted by

Changing the bulb in your rear projection DLP TV is not a hard thing to do but it does have to be done correctly.

It’s a warning sign that many consumers never expect to see on their screen: “Please Replace the LAMP.” The LCD or RPTV projector lamp is reaching the end of its life, and it is time to replace it. Many folks have heard horror stories about the difficulty of replacing the lamp and think they should either toss the TV or call a service technician. Well there is a 3rd option...you can do it yourself!

You only need a few common tools to replace the lamp. You will need a screw driver and a cloth to get started with the project. The screw driver is to remove the cage and the cloth is used to handle the bulb.

Step 1. Replacing the Projector Lamp

Be sure that the the lamp is powered off and unplugged, and remove the lamp compartment, usually on the bottom of the model of your LCD projection unit. Many rear projection television bulbs (RPTVs) have the holding unit near the bottom right or left of the television. Remove the door to the unit by simply undoing the screws.

There are many types and designs so the cage and bulb unit are all different. Some projector model lamps have a small handle on the cage/housing that holds the bulb. If the unit has a handle pull out the complete housing and avoid breaking any of the parts, be gentle. Sometimes cords are connected to the unit, please disconnect these as you see them. Now remove the lamp from the cage/unit.

These cage units typically get very dusty so now is a great time to clean the cage unit with your cloth.

At this point it is a good idea to verify you have the correct lamp before installing the bulb. Check for uniformity and if you have any questions call the vendor. Now, take the new projector lamp and carefully insert the new lamp into the housing and reconnect any power cords. Be sure that the new lamp is attached to the cords and fits in the exact spot the old one was in. Connect all power cords back to the original plugs.

Next, screw the compartment door back onto your projector or RPTV. Make it tight so dust will not get into the compartment, but not so tight that you will not be able to open the door again.

Step 2. Resetting the Timer for the Lamp

Now that we’re done with putting in the new lamp you will need to reset the timer for the unit Please read your instruction manual to determine the basics on doing this. Please do not skip this step, if this step is missed you will keep seeing that bothersome message "Replace LAMP".

You are done! You should have a great new screen projecting your favorite TV shows. As you can see it is easy and a much cheaper alternative to a new TV or an expensive service call.
